Costa Rica: Major cooperative merger and new security pact with El Salvador
Costa Rica is seeing significant developments in its financial and political sectors. The delegate assemblies of the savings and credit cooperatives Coopenae and CoopeAnde have approved a strategic merger. Under this agreement, Coopenae will absorb CoopeAnde, creating the country’s largest cooperative lender with combined assets estimated at approximately 1.62 trillion colones (US$3.58 billion).
In the legislative arena, the Costa Rican Assembly rejected the National Electrical System Harmonization Law. The decision has sparked political tension, with the Partido Pueblo Soberano (PPSO) accusing the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) of betrayal, while the PLN maintains that they are pursuing a broader, more effective modernization agenda.
On the international stage, Costa Rican President Laura Fernández met with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele in San Salvador to sign a bilateral security pact. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation against transnational organized crime, specifically targeting narcotics trafficking and intelligence sharing between the two nations.
