Costa Rica and El Salvador strengthen security and anti-narcotics alliance

Costa Rican President Laura Fernández and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele have agreed to enhance bilateral security cooperation. The partnership focuses on police coordination, intelligence sharing to combat drug trafficking, and increased surveillance of ports and airports. The agreement also includes provisions for cooperation with the United States.

During her official visit to El Salvador, President Fernández toured the Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), a maximum-security prison. This visit follows the inauguration of Costa Rica’s own high-security facility, the High Containment and Organized Crime Center (Cacco), which was inspired by the Salvadoran model. Fernández expressed interest in applying legal reforms similar to those implemented by Bukele to penalize membership in criminal organizations.
