Costa Rica authorities alarm over 3D-printed weapons seizure

Costa Rican authorities have expressed grave concern following the seizure of four 3D-printed weapons during a drug trafficking raid in Uvita de Osa, Puntarenas. The weapons were discovered by the Drug Control Police (PCD) in a luxury residence where agents also confiscated 357 kilograms of cocaine and arrested two individuals.

Security officials, including Vice Minister of Security Nelson Barquero, warned that these “ghost guns” pose a significant threat to national security because they lack serial numbers, brands, or identifiable manufacturers. This absence of data makes it nearly impossible to trace the origin of the weapons or their circulation through regional and international channels.

The Ministry of Security noted that 3D-printed components can be combined with conventional firearm parts to achieve the same level of lethality and firepower as standard weapons. This manufacturing method allows criminal organizations to evade customs and traditional police controls, complicating forensic investigations and law enforcement efforts to combat the rising homicide rates linked to drug trafficking.
