Costa Rica community builds house using recycled plastic

In Alajuelita, Costa Rica, a community initiative has enabled Condy Mora to build a home using recycled plastic blocks after she exhausted her savings to purchase land. The project utilized approximately 7.5 tons of plastic waste, including bottles, containers, and packaging, which were transformed into 850 modular Bliqueplas blocks used for the walls.

The construction was supported by several organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Procter & Gamble, Urrarium, and Ekojunto. These groups provided necessary materials and coordinated over 800 hours of volunteer labor. While the walls are composed of recycled plastic modules, the structure includes conventional materials for the foundation, roof, electrical systems, plumbing, doors, and windows to ensure stability and safety.
