Costa Rica: Deputy Araya cites rising protests over public services

Costa Rican Deputy Edgardo Araya of the Frente Amplio party has attributed a recent surge in public demonstrations to widespread discontent regarding the management of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (Caja), the education system, and the future of the national agricultural sector.

Araya noted that recent mobilizations, including student encampments and participation from small and medium-sized producers from various regions such as Guanacaste, the Caribbean, and Cartago, reflect a new cycle of civic engagement. He criticized the current administration for a perceived lack of political dialogue and for treating state institutions as optional.

The legislator further claimed that the government's decision-making processes benefit limited groups while the majority of the population bears the costs. He specifically highlighted issues such as overcrowding and long wait times within public health services.
