Costa Rica destroys over 9,300 firearms to modernize police equipment
Costa Rican President Laura Fernández Delgado participated in the destruction of 9,372 firearms at the National Arsenal. The operation, organized by the General Directorate of Armament under the Ministry of Public Security, marks the first such event during the current administration.
The majority of the destroyed weapons were state-owned and were deemed obsolete, in poor condition, or no longer suitable for current operational needs. Additionally, 53 seized weapons that had received the necessary judicial resolutions for destruction were included in the process.
This initiative is part of a government plan to modernize police equipment and renew the armaments used by security forces. The destruction is intended to free up storage space within the National Arsenal to facilitate the arrival of new equipment currently being procured. The process also assists in monitoring the inventories of private security companies, which are legally permitted to hold an inventory equivalent to 1% of the state arsenal.
