Costa Rica driving safety: Preparing for irregular rainy season

Due to irregular weather patterns in Costa Rica, drivers are being advised to prepare for sudden changes in road conditions. While the Pacific and Central Valley may experience drier periods, the Caribbean sectors are expected to remain rainy, according to the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN).

Technical expert Randall Agüero from Autopits emphasizes that rainy conditions expose vehicle issues that might go unnoticed during dry weather. Key safety concerns include reduced tire traction, which increases the risk of hydroplaning, and the need for increased braking distances.

To ensure safety, drivers should prioritize the maintenance of tire tread depth, brake functionality, windshield wipers, and lighting systems to maintain visibility and ensure the vehicle can be seen by others.
