Costa Rica enhances Caribbean infrastructure and competitiveness

The Limón province in Costa Rica has shown improvements in its National Competitiveness Index (ICN), rising from 49.6 points in 2024 to 52.6 points in 2025. According to the Consejo de Promoción de la Competitividad (CPC), this growth was driven by the construction sector, fixed internet, information and communication technologies (TIC) in education, and transport infrastructure. Despite this progress, the province remains among the least competitive in the country.

In the Caribbean region, the Benemérito Cuerpo de Bomberos de Costa Rica has inaugurated its 78th fire station in Tortuguero. This new facility aims to improve emergency response for the more than 1,500 permanent residents and the approximately 200,000 annual tourists visiting the area. The establishment of the station required navigating complex environmental regulations and impact assessments to balance public safety with the ecological protection of the sensitive region.
