El Salvador authorities issue weather alerts amid heavy rains and flooding risks
El Salvador is facing significant weather risks due to the influence of a low-pressure field and the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Authorities have issued a national notice as heavy rainfall, cloudiness, and potential storms are expected to persist throughout the week.
Protección Civil has already responded to numerous incidents, including eight fallen trees, five landslides, ten obstructed roads, and 18 flooded homes. There is a high probability of urban flooding and flash floods in several districts, including the San Salvador Metropolitan Area. Additionally, there is a very high risk of landslides and rockfalls in mountainous and volcanic regions.
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) noted that a low-pressure area southwest of the country has a 50% chance of developing into a cyclonic system within the next seven days. As a safety precaution, all natural protected areas in the country remain closed to the public.
