Costa Rica faces rising crime and environmental threats

Costa Rica is facing dual challenges regarding security and environmental protection. In tourist areas and urban centers like San José and Limón, there has been a documented rise in opportunistic crimes, including theft, bag snatching, and burglaries.

Simultaneously, Corcovado National Park is struggling with a shortage of personnel to combat increasing environmental crimes. Advocates report rising instances of illegal gold mining, poaching, logging, and illegal fishing on the Osa Peninsula. While SINAC data indicated 48 rangers were assigned to the park in June, it is estimated that only about 15 are dedicated primarily to protection duties, leaving each ranger responsible for approximately 3,000 hectares of difficult tropical terrain.

Recent enforcement actions have highlighted the volatility of the situation, including the detention of individuals involved in an illegal gold-mining operation along the Sirena River, where suspects allegedly threatened park rangers during the investigation.
