Costa Rica formally severs diplomatic relations with Cuba
Costa Rican Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar Rivera has confirmed the formal rupture of diplomatic relations with Cuba. Tovar stated that the decision will remain in place until the Cuban people regain their freedom, citing the need to stop legitimizing what he described as a “tyrannical and despotic regime.”
This move follows the March announcement regarding the closure of the Costa Rican embassy in Havana and the request for Cuba to withdraw its personnel from San José due to the deterioration of human rights. While formal diplomatic ties are severed, the Cuban Consulate in San José continues to operate for administrative tasks such as passport and certification processing.
Additionally, Tovar announced that Costa Rica will review its voting position at the United Nations concerning the embargo on Cuba. He indicated that the country intends to modify its behavior to avoid supporting the condemnation of an embargo he believes was imposed by the Cuban regime itself. Tovar explicitly denied that these decisions were made under pressure or guidance from the United States.
