Costa Rica Geologists Reject Gold Tokenization Proposal for Crucitas
The Colegio de Geólogos de Costa Rica (CGCR) publicly opposed a legislative initiative to tokenize gold extracted from the Crucitas mining area. The geologists argued that tokenization—a digital representation of a physical asset using blockchain—cannot solve the region's illegal mining problem and would require legally extracted, traceable gold, which is absent due to ongoing illicit extraction.
The proposal was advanced by the Partido Liberación Nacional’s legislative fraction, with Deputy Diana Murillo acting as its main spokesperson. CGCR President Néstor Chamorro warned that the scheme creates confusion, offers no real guarantee of resource protection, and could expose investors to risk while organized crime, environmental contamination, and loss of state control continue in Crucitas.
