Costa Rica illegal weight‑loss drug market exposes public health danger

Investigations have uncovered a black‑market network in Costa Rica selling tirzepatide and other injectable weight‑loss drugs without sanitary registration. Private clinics, pharmacies and WhatsApp groups distribute vials that are split among multiple patients, often with the involvement of some medical professionals. Distributors market bulk‑discount schemes, offering “buy 50, get five free” promotions. Laboratory analysis revealed contamination with bacteria, thyroid hormone, amphetamines and other substances unrelated to the advertised product. Nordic Laboratories, a Norwegian lab whose brand was misused, publicly denied any link to the circulating vials and alerted the Costa Rican Ministry of Health. The Ministry has been warned that the falsified and improperly handled injectables pose serious health risks, including infections, metabolic disturbances and severe cardiovascular complications. Authorities are urged to intervene to halt the illegal trade and protect patients seeking rapid weight loss.
