Costa Rica independence celebrations to involve one million students

More than one million students across Costa Rica will participate in festivities celebrating 205 years of independence. A central part of these celebrations is the relay of the Independence Torch, which will be carried by approximately 22,000 students.

The torch relay will cover roughly 378 kilometers from Peñas Blancas to Cartago on September 13 and 14. Students will be organized into eight main routes and several secondary paths to bring the flame to various communities. The torch is scheduled to arrive at the Ruins in Cartago at 8:00 p.m. on September 14.

To ensure safety, the Ministry of Public Security will deploy about 3,000 officers, while Traffic Police will escort the students along the routes. Additionally, the Costa Rican Red Cross will provide coverage with more than 100 personnel. Authorities have advised participants to wear reflective clothing during night activities and recommend that minors remain accompanied by adults.
