Costa Rica investigates hepatitis A outbreaks in San José districts

The Costa Rican Ministry of Health is investigating active hepatitis A outbreaks in several heavily populated districts of San José, including Desamparados, Hatillo, and Hospital. While the ministry has not released the specific number of current cases or confirmed a link between the different locations, health teams are conducting epidemiological investigations and searching for symptomatic individuals to limit further transmission.

An earlier investigation in late July identified 14 confirmed cases in Desamparados and Aserrí, with no reported hospitalizations or deaths at that time. During that period, inspections of water supply systems revealed disinfection deficiencies in the Lourdes System of the Aserrí Municipal Aqueduct, though authorities noted this did not definitively prove the water was the source of the infections.

Health officials are advising the public to practice rigorous handwashing with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom and before handling food. They also recommend regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces and thorough washing of food before consumption. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, nausea, stomach pain, dark urine, or jaundice are urged to seek medical attention and avoid preparing food for others.
