Costa Rica invests billions in indigenous territories, Route 32 upgrades

The Instituto de Desarrollo Rural (INDER) announced an investment of more than ₡2.5 billion to improve 24 indigenous territories in Costa Rica. Projects include the rehabilitation of five kilometres of road between Bajo Los Indios and Abrojo Montezuma, a new 35‑metre bridge over the La Casona river, rural electrification in partnership with the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), and the restitution of 23 farms covering about 800 hectares, a programme valued at roughly ₡3.6 billion.

Meanwhile, ICE plans to complete lighting and cellular‑and‑internet coverage along Route 32 by mid‑September, with a target to have the works ready by 31 August for celebrations in Limón. The upgrades aim to improve safety on the main corridor linking the Caribbean coast with the capital and to provide reliable phone and internet service along the previously unserved stretch between Sarapiquí and the Zurquí tunnel.
