Costa Rica launches Paralympic sports training for educators

Costa Rica has concluded its second workshop on introductory functional classification for Paralympic sports in San José. The three-day initiative, held at the Special Olympics Gymnasium in La Paz Metropolitan Park, hosted 32 physical education and special education advisors from various administrative regions.

The training is part of the “IMPULSA” program, an inter-institutional strategy led by the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) and the National Paralympic Committee of Costa Rica (CPNCR), with support from the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (ICODER). The program aims to standardize classification methodologies to remove barriers in physical education classrooms and improve competition quality in the national Student Sports Games.

Legal experts note that providing accessible infrastructure and specialized training is a requirement under Costa Rica’s Law 7600 and international human rights conventions, mandating reasonable accommodations and equitable funding for athletes with disabilities.
