Costa Rica Legislative Assembly passes organized crime reform

The Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica has approved a reform to the Organic Law of the Judiciary and the law creating specialized jurisdiction for organized crime. The measure, identified as file 23.090, passed its second debate with 47 votes in favor and two against.

The reform aims to strengthen legal tools to combat criminal structures operating within the country. The urgency of the measure was highlighted by concerns from Attorney General Carlo Díaz Sánchez regarding the expiration of pretrial detention periods, which were set to lapse around June 7. The project now awaits the signature of the President of the Republic and official publication in La Gaceta to take effect.
