Costa Rica legislator Gonzalo Ramírez named head of Security and Narcotics Commission

The Costa Rican Legislative Assembly appointed former deputy Gonzalo Ramírez as president of the Commission of Security and Narcotics. Ramírez, a lawyer, notary public and evangelical pastor who previously served in the 2014‑2018 legislature and led the Assembly during the fourth term of former president Luis Guillermo Solís, will also chair the Commission of Income and Public Expenditure.

He emphasized the need for reforms, stating, “Costa Rica cannot continue facing 21st‑century criminal organizations with institutional tools that have already proved insufficient. The moment demands courage to drive the reforms the country needs and ensure our institutions can respond firmly to organized crime.” The new leadership is expected to strengthen police operational capacity, improve criminal investigation mechanisms, and update the legal framework against narcotrafficking.

Ramírez will be supported by officialist members Kathia Calvo (secretary of the Security Commission) and María Isabel Camareno (secretary of the Income Commission), along with legislators from various parties who will help review and amend security‑related bills before they are sent to the plenary for voting.
