Argentina restarts electoral reform debate in Senate

The Argentine government has decided to relaunch the legislative debate regarding electoral reform. Following a meeting of the administration's political table led by Karina Milei, it was determined that discussions will begin in the Senate commissions starting September 15.

The proposed reform package aims to restructure the country's political system through three primary pillars: the elimination of the PASO (Primaries, Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory) system, allowing political parties to manage candidacies through internal mechanisms; the implementation of a 'Ficha Limpia' mechanism to prevent individuals with confirmed corruption convictions from running for office; and adjustments to the rules governing public and private financing for political campaigns.

The administration intends to push the full text of the initiative to encourage negotiations with opposition sectors to reach a consensus on potential modifications during the commission stage.
