Costa Rica offers diverse living and travel regions

Costa Rica offers diverse landscapes and living options for expats and travelers, ranging from the highland Central Valley to the tropical Caribbean coast. The western Central Valley, including areas like Escazú, Santa Ana, and Heredia, is a primary choice for retirees and remote workers due to its mild climate and proximity to major hospitals and the capital’s airport.

However, safety remains a consideration for residents. In 2025, Costa Rica recorded 873 homicides, a rate of 16.7 per 100,000 people. San José province, which includes parts of the Central Valley, reported the highest number of killings with 293, while Limón province recorded 172. The US State Department currently rates the country at Level 2, advising travelers to “Exercise Increased Caution” due to crime.

For tourism, the Caribbean coast in Limón Province provides a distinct experience characterized by Afro-Caribbean traditions, banana plantations, and lush mountains. Destinations such as Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, and Manzanillo offer access to tropical forests and protected areas like Cahuita National Park, where rainforest meets the sea.
