Costa Rica opposition claims lack of dialogue with Chaves administration
Costa Rican opposition deputies have criticized the lack of dialogue between the Executive branch and the Legislative Assembly. They have characterized the Vice Minister of the Presidency, Alejandro Barrantes, as a ‘ghost minister’ because he remains the sole link between the ‘democratic bloc’ and the government. While President Rodrigo Chaves has met with the ruling Pueblo Soberano (PPSO) party in Congress, he has not held meetings with opposition factions.
Concurrently, government officials Laura Fernández and Rodrigo Chaves have accused opposition parties, including the PLN, FA, CAC, and PUSC, of acting as an ‘obstructionist bloc’ by blocking priority projects. An analysis of the first four months of the current legislative term shows a complex landscape: while various agreements have been reached on numerous projects, significant disagreements persist regarding specific initiatives such as Crucitas and electrical harmonization.
