Costa Rica police bust Los Maruja drug labs, seize cocaine, crack and weapons

The Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) conducted raids on a suspected drug laboratory used by the criminal group “Los Maruja” in Dique La Mora, Cartago. Agents seized a 9 mm pistol, an AR‑15 rifle, an AK‑47 magazine, and large quantities of cocaine, crack, marijuana, ketamine and other substances, with a street‑value estimated at ¢65 million. Three suspects – Garro (37), Calvo (18) and Gómez (34) – were arrested. OIJ director Michael Soto said, “Consideramos que este es el principal centro de distribución y cocina del grupo ‘Los Maruja’ en Cartago.”

A day later, police raided a residence in Orosi linked to the same organization, detaining another suspect. Inside they found an altar to the Santa Muerte surrounded by candles, images, cash and alcoholic drinks, as well as ready‑to‑sell drugs. The operation adds to the ongoing investigations into Los Maruja, identified as a leading drug distributor and a source of violence in the Cartago region.
