Costa Rica political figures linked to suspected drug trafficker
Controversy has emerged in Costa Rica following revelations that individuals linked to Juan Carlos Tam Zhang, a Chinese-Costa Rican citizen facing extradition to the United States, attended the victory celebration of President Laura Fernández.
Tam Zhang, also known as Juan Carlos Tam Cheong, was detained in October on allegations of international drug trafficking and money laundering. Authorities suggest he has links to Mexican and Colombian criminal organizations, including the Sinaloa and Gulf cartels. Reports indicate that his partner, Argerie Valverde Venegas, was photographed at the February 1st celebration at the Hotel Aurola wearing apparel from the Pueblo Soberano party.
In the Legislative Assembly, Deputy Diana Murillo of the National Liberation Party criticized the incident, stating that the presence of such figures at political events signals that the doors of Costa Rican politics are “open wide to drug trafficking.” Murillo called for urgent investigations by the Public Ministry and warned that organized crime seeks to buy impunity and build influence within political structures.
