Costa Rica President Fernández meets judges to address security crisis

On 18 May in San José, President Laura Fernández convened senior members of the Costa Rican judiciary at the Casa Presidencial to discuss the country's escalating security crisis. The meeting, attended by the ministers of Presidency and Finance (Rodrigo Chaves), Public Security (Gerald Campos), Justice and Peace (Gabriel Aguilar), Communication (Arnold Zamora), and the president’s chief of staff (Alexander Astorga), focused on four concrete measures aimed at strengthening cooperation between the executive and judicial branches to combat organized crime and drug trafficking.

Supreme Court President Orlando Aguirre echoed the call for collaboration, stating that “this is not the time for antagonisms between powers” and urging a comprehensive review of the criminal procedure system to better respond to the rise in organized crime. Both officials emphasized the need to set aside tensions and work jointly on reforms that will restore public safety.
