Costa Rica President Laura Fernández Demands Top Judges Resign Over Prisoner Releases

President Laura Fernández Delgado publicly criticized Costa Rica’s Judicial Power after members of the criminal gang “Los Marujas” and three men accused of shooting at the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) were released. She said the releases constitute a “grave blow to the country’s security” and accused the head of the Penal Cassation Chamber, Patricia Solano, and the Supreme Court president, Rolando Aguirre, of failing the nation. Fernández called on both officials to “seriously consider stepping aside” and urged the Legislative Assembly to hold them accountable.

The president also highlighted the government’s own security actions, noting new legislation, increased police operations and additional resources aimed at combating high‑level crime. She warned that without decisive judicial leadership, Costa Ricans would continue to live “in fear while criminals walk free.”
