Costa Rica provides new home to 119-year-old man
José Flores, a 119-year-old resident of Sardinal de Carrillo, Guanacaste, has received a new, fully equipped home through a government initiative. The 63-square-meter residence was constructed using resources from the National Housing Financial System, specifically the family housing bonus administered by BANHVI.
The project was a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Housing and Human Settlements (MIVAH), the National Council for the Older Adult (CONAPAM), BANHVI, Grupo Mutual, and the construction firm Inmobiliaria SYNSA S.A. The new home is designed with empathetic architecture to accommodate the mobility and safety needs of elderly residents.
President Laura Fernández Delgado participated in the handover, noting that this is the first of a series of cases under the ‘Estrategia Costa Rica Centenaria’ (Centenarian Costa Rica Strategy). This plan aims to prioritize housing for citizens aged 100 and older. In addition to the structure, the home was delivered with new furniture, appliances, and food supplies to support the family.
