Costa Rica reports fatal residential fire and family losses in Alajuela

A residential fire in the Bosques de Moravia community in San José, Costa Rica, resulted in the death of 63-year-old Gina Lacayo Cabrera. Neighbors reported seeing her on her balcony requesting assistance as flames and smoke trapped her inside the home. Authorities from the OIJ and Fire Department are investigating the incident, which marks the 16th fire-related fatality in the country in 2026.

In a separate incident in San Rafael de Alajuela, a fire destroyed three homes, leaving a family of nine without belongings. The affected group includes an elderly person, a six-year-old child, a woman four months pregnant, and six adults. The family has issued a public appeal for donations of food, clothing, and household items to assist in their recovery.
