Costa Rican authorities seized Alejandro Arias Monge, alias “Diablo,” the country’s most wanted drug lord, on the night of 24 July 2026 near Sarapiquí in Heredia, close to the Nicaraguan border. The operation lasted about an hour, resulted in a shootout that left eight Costa Rican agents wounded and a suspected member of his organization dead. Arias was arrested together with his lieutenant Jonathan Pérez Méndez, known as “Tan.”

The U.S. Embassy in San José praised the raid and recalled a $500,000 bounty offered by the U.S. State Department for information leading to his capture. Shortly after, Arias was transferred to the maximum‑security La Reforma prison. Prosecutor Carlo Díaz confirmed that two DEA agents met with Arias in court to discuss a possible extradition, and that the Ministry of Justice and Peace had asked for virtual hearings for security reasons. His daughter, identified as Arias Fonseca, was later detained near the entrance of La Reforma prison. Arias also alleged that police officers had assisted him while he was a fugitive, a claim now under investigation.
