Costa Rica sees growth in food imports and culinary tourism

Costa Rica is experiencing significant shifts in its culinary landscape, marked by a surge in high-value food imports and a growing emphasis on gastronomic tourism. Data from the Italian Trade Agency indicates that imports of Italian pasta into Costa Rica rose by 28.6% year-over-year during the first half of 2026, with total valuation increasing from approximately ₡567 million in 2025 to ₡727 million in 2026.

Simultaneously, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) has highlighted the country's regional flavors through its culinary competition, “Costa Rica, un país de sabores por descubrir.” Kendall Garita Alfaro was named the winner of the second season, receiving the “Cuchara del ICT” award for his preparation of traditional Afro-Caribbean dishes, including rondón and fried pastel.

Legal experts note that as the gastronomic sector expands, businesses must navigate complex regulatory frameworks. This includes adhering to Ministry of Health sanitary registrations, phytosanitary controls, and intellectual property protections for geographical indications to ensure long-term commercial success.
