Costa Rica selects film representatives for Oscars and Goya Awards

Costa Rica has selected two films to represent the nation at major international film awards. The Costa Rican Film and Audiovisual Center, under the Ministry of Culture and Youth, announced the official selections following a review by a specialized committee.

Kim Torres’ film, ‘Si no ardemos, cómo iluminar la noche’, will represent Costa Rica in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. A co-production between Costa Rica, Mexico, and France, the film follows a 13-year-old girl in a rural community who uncovers a secret threatening the women in her life.

Valentina Maurel’s ‘Siempre soy tu animal materno’ has been chosen to compete in the Best Ibero-American Film category at the 41st Goya Awards.

Selection as a national representative does not guarantee a nomination; both films must still undergo the formal submission and review processes by their respective academies to be considered for final nominations.
