Security sweeps target contraband in Latin American prisons
In the early hours of Friday, authorities carried out a preventive search at the Cereso La Toma in Amatlán, Veracruz, Mexico. State security forces, the Directorate of Prevention and Reinsertion Social and K9 units inspected cells for narcotics, weapons and other prohibited items, with human‑rights observers present.
A similar operation in Chile’s Alto Hospicio prison resulted in the seizure of $447,220 in cash, artisanal weapons, and multiple doses of drugs, as part of Gendarmería’s zero‑tolerance policy against organized crime inside penitentiaries.
In Costa Rica, the Prison Police removed 651 electrical outlets, 562 m of cable and other improvised wiring from several detention centers to eliminate fire hazards and prevent illicit activities, following a directive from President Laura Fernández Delgado.
Venezuela’s Ministry of Justice and Peace reported a comparable removal of 651 sockets, over 500 m of cable and related components from prisons nationwide, aiming to tighten control and improve safety for inmates and staff.
