Costa Rica Supreme Court President declines meeting with President Fernández
Orlando Aguirre Gómez, President of the Supreme Court of Justice, has announced he will not attend a meeting of the three Supreme Powers scheduled for August 21, 2026. The meeting was convened by President Laura Fernández Delgado.
In an official communication, Aguirre stated that while the Judicial Branch supports the initiative to reactivate dialogue between branches, he objects to the proposed mechanism. He argued that a political space should not be used to set goals, deadlines, or periodic compliance evaluations for the Judicial Branch, as such matters must respect constitutional competencies and the authority of the Full Court.
Aguirre emphasized that his decision is intended to preserve the independent exercise of judicial functions rather than to hinder coordination. He noted that cooperation regarding security matters, including work between the Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ), the Public Ministry, and executive police forces, will continue as normal.
