Costa Rica wins 21 medals at Para Athletics Grand Prix in Cali

The Costa Rican para athletics delegation achieved a historic performance at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Cali, Colombia, securing a total of 21 medals. Despite traveling with a small delegation of only eight athletes, the team earned 3 gold, 10 silver, and 8 bronze medals.

Sprinter Sherman Guity led the team by winning two gold medals in the T64 category for the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. Guity’s performance concludes his 2026 season as he prepares for the World Championships in Tashkent and the 2027 Parapan American Games.

Other notable achievements include 17-year-old Dalessandro Abarca, who set a new American record in the javelin throw with a bronze medal and earned another bronze in shot put. Daniel Fajardo secured a gold medal in the 800-meter tricycle event, along with two silver medals. Additional medals were contributed by Laurens Molina, Melissa Calvo, Sophia Orozco, Amalia Ortuño, and María José Martínez.

The competition featured 340 athletes from 25 nations at the Pedro Grajales Stadium.
