Costa Rican authorities seize five tons of unauthorized eggs
Authorities in Cartago, Costa Rica, seized more than five tons of unauthorized egg shipments that were unfit for human consumption. During an operation involving SENASA, the municipal police, and fiscal control forces, inspectors discovered mold, rotten eggs, and worms within the cargo. The products were subsequently transported to an authorized landfill for destruction.
The National Chamber of Poultry Farmers of Costa Rica (CANAVI) has issued a statement supporting the actions taken by SENASA and other authorities. CANAVI clarified that the seized goods originated from unauthorized sources and lacked the traceability required by law.
Gabriela Brenes, Executive Director of CANAVI, emphasized that the incident highlights the necessity of effective surveillance. The chamber noted that eggs sold through formal channels in Costa Rica undergo strict sanitary controls and good practices throughout the entire chain, from production and packaging to storage and transport. Consumers are advised to purchase eggs from formal businesses where origin and traceability can be verified.
