Costa Rican Bar Association denounces gender-based violence in politics

The Board of Directors of the Costa Rican Bar Association, supported by its Gender Commission, has issued a statement repudiating all forms of gender-based violence against women in political and public life. The association noted that sexist attacks, sexualization, threats, and gender-based disqualifications intended to undermine political rights constitute forms of discrimination.

The statement clarifies that while political criticism and questioning of public officials are democratic pillars, they must not be used to mask intimidation or the delegitimization of women through gender stereotypes. The Association cited international standards, including CEDAW and the Convention of Belém do Pará, which mandate state obligations to prevent, investigate, and sanction such violence.

Finally, the Board called upon public officials, specifically deputies, to refrain from exercising gender-based violence in their professional conduct.
