Honduras implements electricity debt forgiveness for low-consumption households

The Honduran government, through the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE), has formally begun applying Article 20 of the Energy Justice Law. This measure establishes a special debt forgiveness regime specifically for residential users with low consumption levels.

To qualify, individuals must hold residential accounts with an average monthly consumption not exceeding 250 kilowatt-hours (kWh). The amnesty is comprehensive, covering not only unpaid energy consumption but also all accumulated surcharges, interest, fines, and administrative fees. Eligible users must apply in person at ENEE offices with documentation proving their legal relationship to the property.

ENEE officials noted that while this relief provides immediate aid to vulnerable families, the company continues to face significant structural challenges. The state utility is working to reduce its massive debt to energy generators and address energy losses in the distribution network, which have historically exceeded 30%. Efforts to stabilize ENEE's finances are part of a broader economic program coordinated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
