Costa Rican PLN seeks investigation into Guobin Tam Zhang's political ties

The National Liberation Party (PLN) is pushing for the creation of a special investigative commission in the Legislative Assembly to examine potential political and electoral financing links involving Guobin Tam Zhang, also known as Juan Carlos Tam Cheong. Tam Zhang is currently detained pending extradition to the United States.

The proposed commission aims to investigate possible tax evasion, money laundering, and connections between Tam Zhang’s business interests and political parties, campaign structures, and public officials. The motion follows the circulation of photographs placing the businessman at a private celebration for President Laura Fernández’s electoral victory.

In response to scrutiny, PLN President Ricardo Sancho stated that the party has not received contributions from questionable individuals or foreign entities. Sancho expressed the party's willingness to open its finances to official investigations and called for all political parties to submit to similar scrutiny regarding electoral funding regulations.
