Costa Rican PPSO deputies shift stance on pension reforms

Four deputies from the Partido Pueblo Soberano (PPSO) have faced scrutiny for shifting stances regarding pension reforms. Initially, the lawmakers—Esmeralda Britton González, Roberth Barrantes Camacho, Anna Katharina Müller Castro, and Royner Mora Ruiz—signed a legislative report opposing a proposal by the Frente Amplio. Their report argued that imposing new restrictions on existing pensions for former presidents would constitute a “manifest violation” of the constitutional principle of irretroactivity, as protected by Article 34 of the Constitution.

However, within eight days of rejecting the Frente Amplio's initiative, the same deputies publicly supported a project presented by President Laura Fernández Delgado. This new proposal seeks to eliminate the special pension regime and extend restrictions to include pensions that are currently being paid.
