Costa Rican private health sector offers capacity to reduce CCSS waiting lists
The Costa Rican Chamber of Health has expressed readiness to assist the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) in reducing medical waiting lists. Rodolfo Garbanzo, president of the Chamber, stated that the private sector is prepared to offer its infrastructure, which includes 380 beds and 61 operating rooms, to help manage consultations, exams, and surgeries.
Discussions are ongoing with the CCSS and the Ministry of Health to exchange information regarding costs and efficiency models. This potential collaboration follows recent regulatory changes that may require the CCSS to outsource services when patient waiting times exceed specific limits. While the private sector is offering its services, the final decision and contracting mechanisms remain under the authority of the CCSS.
