Costa Rica's Constitutional Chamber receives Gran Premio Chapultepec

The Inter-American Press Association (SIP) has awarded the 2026 Gran Premio Chapultepec to the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Costa Rica. The distinction recognizes the court's jurisprudence regarding freedom of expression, press freedom, and the public's right to receive pluralistic and independent information.

SIP President Pierre Manigault noted that the court's decisions serve as an example of how independent justice protects the democratic rule of law. Specific rulings cited include those protecting journalists from government harassment during press conferences and a decision to annul a radio and television frequency auction process to preserve information pluralism.

Fernando Castillo Víquez, president of the Constitutional Chamber, stated that the court accepts the award with a “deep sense of responsibility,” emphasizing that protecting these rights is an ongoing task essential for active citizenship and democratic systems.
