Costa Rica's Contraloria General Marta Acosta on medical leave

Marta Acosta Zúñiga, the Contraloria General of the Republic of Costa Rica, has been absent from her duties since Monday, 27 July, after a health problem required immediate medical attention. The agency confirmed that she will remain away for the period needed for her recovery and asked the public to respect her family’s privacy. Rumors have linked her to hospitalization at San José’s Hospital Calderón Guardia, but the Contraloría has neither confirmed nor denied the location, stating only that her condition is reported as stable.

In Acosta’s absence, sub‑contralor general Bernal Aragón Barquero has assumed the functions of the office, as mandated by the Costa Rican Constitution, ensuring continuity of fiscal oversight. Acosta, 67, has served as Contraloria General since May 2012 and was re‑elected for a second term that runs until May 2028.
