Costa Rica's MEIC announces toy safety and labeling seminar

The Costa Rican Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC) is hosting a free virtual seminar on September 3 to educate consumers on toy labeling and safe purchasing practices ahead of Children's Day.

Under technical regulations, all toys sold in the country must feature labeling in Spanish. This information must include the product name, details of the producer, importer, or distributor, country of origin, recommended age, and specific safety warnings or precautions.

To ensure safety, the MEIC advises consumers to inspect toys for small detachable parts, sharp edges, long cords, or easily accessible battery compartments. They also recommend checking that materials are not toxic or flammable. For online purchases, the ministry suggests using secure websites (starting with ‘https://’ and displaying a padlock icon) and verifying that retailers adhere to their stated delivery timelines. All products carry a minimum legal warranty of 30 business days from the date of delivery.
