Costa Rica's Nicoya Annexation Anniversary Sparks Political Tensions and Personal Milestones
Costa Rica marked the 202nd anniversary of the annexation of the Partido de Nicoya with a series of official and cultural events in Guanacaste from July 25 to 27, 2026. The Legislative Assembly held a solemn session on July 24 at Parque Recaredo Briceño in Nicoya, followed by visits to local communities.
President Laura Fernández led a government council in Nicoya, using the occasion to launch investments worth more than ₡62 million and to denounce the judiciary over budget cuts and the recent capture of criminal Alejandro Arias Monge, known as “Diablo”. Minister Rodrigo Chaves also criticised the interim director of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial, Michael Soto, for alleged mismanagement.
During the celebrations, a group of University of Costa Rica students experienced acts of intolerance, were forced to withdraw from a peaceful demonstration and required police escort. Meanwhile, legislator Joselyn Sánchez announced her personal engagement on a beach in Guanacaste, sharing photos of the moment on social media.
