Costco customer controversy in Mexico over soda refill limits

A video of a customer filling two 20-liter containers with soda at a Costco in Aguascalientes, Mexico, has sparked a debate regarding consumer rights and the limits of refill services. The incident, which went viral on social media, led to accusations of service abuse after employees intervened to stop the customer.

The customer, referred to online as ‘Lord Refill,’ released a video defending his actions. He stated that he had purchased 100 hot dog combos for an event and used the large containers for logistical reasons and to reduce plastic waste from individual cups. He maintained that the drinks were included in his purchase and that the transaction had been validated at the registers.

The store manager clarified that the volume of liquid was justified by the large quantity of food items purchased. While the incident raised legal questions regarding the ‘good faith’ use of commercial services and the Federal Consumer Protection Law, Costco has not announced any changes to its internal refill policies.
