Costera-Canal door‑to‑door waste collection rollout faces delays and high demand

The Mancomunitat de la Costera‑Canal has begun a third phase of its door‑to‑door waste‑collection system, sending an environmental educator to municipalities to explain the new bins, separation rules and answer residents' questions before the service starts in October. President José Luis Gijón said the aim is to ensure no neighbour is left uncertain about how the system works.

In the Camp d'Elx area, the same door‑to‑door pruning service, launched in 2022 under the PSOE‑Compromís coalition, is experiencing up to three‑week waiting times because of a surge in requests. The contractor UTE has added an afternoon crew but still reports a 21 % rise in daily requests compared with the previous year. Service will be suspended from 10‑14 August for city events, and officials note record collection volumes in July, exceeding 169 000 kg of green waste.

Both initiatives highlight the challenges of scaling the new collection model and the effort to keep residents informed and compliant.
