Costume Designer Neeta Lulla Reveals Hand‑Painted Bandhani and Multi‑Layered White Dress for Sridevi in Lamhe
National Award‑winning costume designer Neeta Lulla explained how she created two challenging outfits for Sridevi in Yash Chopra’s 1991 film Lamhe. For a bandhani skirt and crop top, Lulla hand‑painted white pattern on maroon fabric and yellow on blue after the required designs could not be sourced, noting the fabric felt slightly stiff after painting.
Lulla also detailed the iconic white dress worn by Sridevi in the song “Kabhi Main Kahan Hoon”. She layered three to four white georgette chiffon sarees to achieve the desired volume, added a chiffon under‑layer to diffuse the white, and used scarves as a belt. The outfit was filmed in Switzerland, and Lulla highlighted the difficulty of rendering white on screen. Both anecdotes illustrate the lengths taken to realise Sridevi’s vision in the film.
