Maumelle High School player finds venomous snake in football helmet

A high school football player at Maumelle High School in Arkansas discovered a venomous cottonmouth snake inside his helmet during practice. The student had reportedly been wearing the helmet for approximately one hour before noticing unusual movement and alerting coaching staff.

Maumelle Animal Services responded to the scene. While officials initially suspected the snake might be a copperhead, they confirmed it was a two-foot-long cottonmouth, which is considered the second most venomous snake in Arkansas. Because the snake was nestled deep within the helmet padding, responders had to use water to flush the reptile out of the equipment.

Maumelle Animal Services Director Chris Davis noted that the player was fortunate not to have been bitten, stating the encounter could have been fatal. The snake was safely captured and relocated to a nearby wooded area. Following the incident, school athletic staff reminded students to inspect all outdoor gear and equipment for animals before use.
