Council of Europe urges Turkey to release Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ
The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers has reiterated its demand for the immediate release of jailed Kurdish politicians Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ. This call follows binding rulings from the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), which determined that their detention lacked reasonable grounds and was intended to stifle political pluralism.
During meetings in Strasbourg, the Committee urged Turkish authorities to utilize all available legal avenues to comply with the ECtHR decisions. This includes the recently passed Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration. The Committee has requested clarification from Ankara regarding whether the Demirtaş case applicants are eligible for benefits under this new legislation and how it will be implemented.
Additionally, the Committee sought information on individual measures to address the convictions of Burcu Çelik Özkan and Aysel Tuğluk. It also emphasized the need for Turkey to uphold constitutional protections for the political speech of parliamentarians in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights.
