Council of the Polish Language advises against name ‘Wiosna’

The Council of the Polish Language (Rada Języka Polskiego) has advised against using the name ‘Wiosna’ for girls. According to PESEL registry data from the Ministry of Digital Affairs, only 11 women in Poland currently bear this name.

Professor Andrzej Markowski, chairman of the Council, explained that the recommendation stems from guidelines for civil registry offices. These guidelines suggest avoiding names derived from common nouns, such as ‘Wiosna’ (Spring), ‘goździk’ (carnation), or ‘sonata’. While the name is legally permissible under the Law on Civil Status Acts, the Council maintains that it conflicts with established linguistic recommendations for naming children.
